Is my site blocked from Google AI Overviews?

Last updated

AI Overviews and AI Mode answer from Google Search's index, which Googlebot crawls. Google's requirement is that a page be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet; the controls are robots.txt rules for Googlebot and the nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex rules. Google-Extended does not change this: Google says it does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search.

Eight requests: robots.txt, the homepage as a browser, and the homepage as six AI crawlers. Nothing is stored.

The crawlers that decide it for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

GooglebotGoogle
Crawls for the Google Search index. A page must be in that index, and eligible for a snippet, to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, read )In this check: robots.txt verdict only. CDNs such as Cloudflare verify Googlebot by its IP address, so a request that imitates it from our address is refused by design and would prove nothing.

Other ways a site is invisible to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Crawler access is the first condition of AI visibility, not the only one. This check does not measure the following.

  • Not indexed, or no snippet allowed. A page marked noindex, or one whose snippet is withheld with nosnippet, is not eligible to be shown as a supporting link, whatever robots.txt says. (Google Search Central, AI features and your website)
  • Opted out in Search Console. Since June 2026 a Search Console setting can opt a property out of AI features without affecting its ordinary snippets. It lives in Search Console, so neither robots.txt nor this check can see it. (Google's Search generative AI control, June 2026, via our research paper)

The free audit crawls up to 25 pages the way an answer engine reads them and reports pages whose content only appears with JavaScript, pages marked noindex and blocked crawlers, with the evidence. Whether a page is in a search index is reported by the index's owner, in Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools; neither this check nor the audit sees it.
